Company History
The Yuengling Family came to the United States in 1823 from Germany. In 1829, David G. Yuengling began the “Eagle Brewery” in Pottsville, Pennsylvania. In 1873, Frederick Yuengling joined the business with his father. That same year, the brewery name was changed to D.G. Yuengling & Son. During Prohibition, the Yuengling Brewery survived by producing “near beer” and ran a dairy which produced ice cream. In 1933, beer lovers won the fight against Prohibition and the Yuengling family introduced Winner Beer to celebrate the repeal; a case was sent by the Yuengling family to President Roosevelt as a gesture of good will and thanks. In 1963, Richard L., Sr. and F. Dohrman succeeded their father, Frederick. In 1985, Richard L., Jr. (“Dick”) Yuengling took over the brewery as the 5th generation company president. In 1999, Dick purchased and opened the Tampa plant to increase manufacturing capacity due to high demand for the beer. At present, Dick is grooming his four daughters, Deborah, Jennifer, Wendy and Sheryl, to continue the Yuengling tradition as the 6th generation of the brewing family.
